Steve McCraven

Stephen "Steve" McCraven (born August 7, 1954 in Washington, DC ) is an American jazz musician (drums).

Live and act

McCraven learned drums and played in school bands from the age of eight. At the age of 14 he became a member of the TC Grand Ensemble in Cheshire under the direction of Sonny Costanzo . He studied at Berklee College of Music with Alan Dawson and Joseph Hunt and at the University of Massachusetts with Max Roach . He toured Europe in 1977 with Marion Brown and was involved in his album La Placita . Emigrated to Paris in 1978, he took lessons from Philly Joe Jones , Kenny Clark and Oliver Johnson .

McCraven has been part of Archie Shepp's quartet for 30 years and also performs regularly with David Murray and Piotr Wojtasik . He also played with Mal Waldron , Harold Ashby , Freddie Hubbard , Hank Crawford , Charles Tolliver , David Fathead Newman , Sugar Blue , Horace Parlan , Michael Gregory , James Moody , Pee Wee Ellis , Benny Golson , Éric Le Lann , Michel Graillier and Jalal Mansur Nuriddin ( The Last Poets ). As the leader of his own groups, he released ten albums. He can also be heard on albums by Yusef Lateef , Jemeel Moondoc , Sonny Gray , Kirsti Alho , Calvin Newborn , Kali Z. Fasteau and Tom McClung .

McCraven gave numerous master classes and taught at several music schools in France and the USA. He is the father of the drummer Makaya McCraven .
