Michael Gregory Jackson

Michael Gregory Jackson (also: Michael Gregory ; born August 28, 1953 in New Haven (Connecticut) ) is an American musician ( guitar , vocals , cello , flute , marimba and vibraphone ) of creative jazz , who also works as a fusion musician and singer-songwriter is active.

Live and act

Jackson began playing drums as a child, only to focus on the guitar from the age of twelve. First he worked as a singer-songwriter and played in blues and folk bands before he devoted himself to the creative music of the AACM . He played regularly with Leo Smith , from the mid-1970s also with Oliver Lake , Anthony Braxton , Fred Hopkins , Phil Wilson , George Lewis , Barry Altschul and Muhal Richard Abrams , etc. a. to be heard on the recordings of the Wildflowers Loft Sessions (1976). Then he formed a trio with Anthony Davis and Pheeroan AkLaff . In the early 1980s he turned to rock music and founded the group Signal ; In 1981 he performed in Berlin ( Rockpalast recording). In order not to be confused with Michael Jackson , he now called himself Michael Gregory. At Island Records he released Situation X (1983), but had increasing problems with the music producers and eventually retired to Massachusetts . In recent years he has worked with Stephen Allen , but also again with Oliver Lake. He can also be heard on recordings by Oliver Lake, Pheeroan aKlaff, Nona Hendryx, Amina Claudine Myers , the Coyote Sisters , Louis Guarino and Viva Monroe.
