Calvin Newborn

Calvin Newborn (* 27. April 1933 in Memphis , Tennessee ; † 1. December 2018 ) was an American jazz guitarist of modern jazz .

Live and act

Calvin Newborn is the younger brother of the pianist Phineas Newborn . He played in local orchestras from 1950 to 1956, one of which was directed by his father; first recordings were made in 1950 with Lou Sargent And His Orchestra. In 1953 he worked for Roy Milton . From 1956 he played in his brother's quartet and took part in the latter's recording sessions for the albums Fabulous Phineas and Phineas ' Rainbow . Then he played with Lionel Hampton . He also worked on recordings with Booker Little and Max Roach in 1958, with Earl Hines in 1959 , with Wild Bill Davis ( Dance the Madison ) in 1960 and with Jimmy Forrest ( Sit Down and Relax ) in 1961 . He then worked as a studio musician in Memphis; also with Sun Ra , Al Gray , Freddie Roach and Lou Donaldson . In the 1970s he then moved to Los Angeles . In the 1980s he appeared as an accompanist on albums by Hank Crawford , Charlie Rich and Jimmy Witherspoon . In the field of jazz, he was involved in 45 recording sessions between 1950 and 2004.
