Sugar Blue (* 16th December 1949 in Harlem , New York City as James Whiting ) is an American blues harmonica player .

Life

James Whiting's parents were artists who performed regularly at the Apollo Theater in Harlem . He got his first harmonica at the age of 10 and was already part of Chicago's blues scene at the age of sixteen. In 1976 he moved to Paris , where he came into contact with The Rolling Stones . He has also worked with Willie Dixon , Louisiana Red , Bob Dylan , Stan Getz , Ray Charles , Frank Zappa and other musicians, among others . When Sugar Blue released his first solo record in 1980, he was no longer a stranger. His best-known work can be heard in the Rolling Stones song Miss You . As a result, the Rolling Stones Sugar Blue kept coming back.

In 1997 Sugar Blue performed live on stage at several concerts on Prince 's tour Love-4-One-Another-Charities-Tour . In 1998 he played a funeral march with Billy Branch with his harmonica at the funeral of Junior Wells (a blues harp player) .

Sugar Blue preferred to go its own way instead of becoming a firm sideman of the Rolling Stones. He has regularly recorded his own albums, which are rooted in the blues, but which often go beyond its musical schemes. In addition, he has repeatedly entered into engagements with other projects, for example with Stan Getz's group . In 1985 he received a Grammy Award.
