Louisiana Red (born Iverson Minter ; born March 23, 1932 in Bessemer , Alabama ; † February 25, 2012 in Hanover , Germany ) was an American blues musician who made many appearances in Europe.

Life

Louisiana Red was born with the name Iverson Minter . His mother died of pneumonia a week after he was born. When he was five years old, his father was murdered by the Ku Klux Klan . He lived in orphanages for three years , then with his grandmother in Pennsylvania . He wanted to be a blues musician ever since he met Muddy Waters . Other stations in his life initially included a forced labor sentence for burglary and his participation in the Korean War .

Louisiana Red has recorded blues on various labels since 1949 . At the end of the 1950s he was in John Lee Hooker's band for about two years , but then went into business again. In Europe, Louisiana Red became known to a larger audience through an appearance at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1975, a recording of the WDR Rockpalast in 1976 and through his participation in the American Folk Blues Festival (1980/81 and 1983). He also recorded with Eunice Davis .

The stage name Louisiana Red goes back to Iverson Minter's predilection for a red chilli sauce of that name. In addition, Red next had African and American Indian blood in his veins.

In 1983 he received the Handy Award from the Blues Foundation for best traditional blues musician.

In March 2001, the city of Woodstock , New York , Louisiana Red presented the coveted city key, which corresponds to honorary citizenship.

In German-speaking countries, he preferred to tour with the Stormy Monday blues band from Essen, the Reutlingen blues group Blueskraft , Al Jones , Tin Pan Alley or the Fantastic Boogaloo Kings or Dynamite Daze , as the latter group is now called.

Since 1981 he lived in Germany ( Hanover ). In 2005 the documentary Red and Blues was released about him. He died in Hanover in 2012 after a stroke.
