The Jalisco barbed pocket mouse ( Heteromys spectabilis , synonym : Liomys spectabilis ) is a type of barbed pocket mouse and occurs only in the southeast of the Mexican state of Jalisco .

features

The Jalisco pocket mouse reaches a head-trunk length of about 10.9 centimeters for the males and 10.2 centimeters for the females. The tail becomes 12.3 cm and 14.3 cm long and the average weight is about 65 grams. The average ear length is 17 millimeters and the average hind foot length is 31 millimeters. It is a comparatively small species for the genus, the males are on average much larger than the females. The fur of the adult animal is rough and contains individual stiffened, flat, spiky hairs on the back and stomach. The back fur is red-brown with an ocher-colored side line, the belly side is white. The hair on the back fur is not curly and does not cover the spiky hair.

The front areas of the soles of the hind feet are sparsely hairy and have six tubercles. The claw of the second toe of the hind feet is shaped like a spoon, which is probably an adaptation to digging activities. The tail is slightly hairy and darker on the top than on the underside. The molars have medium-height crowns and the premolars are lower. The tympanic cavities are only slightly flattened.

The karyotype consists of a diploid chromosome set of 2n = 48 chromosomes (FN = 64).

distribution

The distribution area of the Jalisco barbed pocket mouse is restricted to the southeast of the Mexican state of Jalisco . The height distribution ranges from 960 to about 1615 meters.

Way of life

The Jalisco barbed pocket mouse originally lived mainly in dry pine-oak forests at altitudes of 960 to 1615 meters. The original forest areas, however, have been greatly changed by agriculture and today the animals live mainly in bushes, ruderal areas, grasslands and corn fields as well as in isolated trees.

The animals are nocturnal and can be found all year round. There is hardly any information available about diet and lifestyle, as well as reproduction. It is assumed that the animals are loners and have no fixed mating partners. They probably have no time-limited breeding times and the females can have offspring throughout the year.

Systematics

The Jalisco barbed pocket mouse is classified as an independent species within the genus of the barbed pocket mouse ( Heteromys ), which consists of 16 species. The first scientific description comes from Hugh H. Genoways from 1871, who introduced the species as Liomys spectabilis . The former genus Liomys was considered paraphyletic within the genus Heteromys and dissolved. Together with the Mexican barbed pocket mouse ( Heteromys irroratus ) and the colorful barbed pocket mouse ( Heteromys pictus ), the Jalisco barbed pocket mouse forms a common clade within the genus.

Apart from the nominate form, no further subspecies are distinguished within the species .

Status, threat and protection

The Jalisco pocket mouse is classified as "endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). This is justified by the very small distribution area, which is affected by strong changes due to agricultural use and fragmentation due to the region's road system.
