Bobby Broom (* 18th January 1961 in New York City as Robert Broom, Jr. ) is an American jazz guitarist and music teacher.

Live and act

Bobby Broom began to learn guitar at the age of 13, first playing folk , then occupied himself with jazz while studying with jazz guitarist Jimmy Carter in Harlem . He attended High School of Music and Art and performed in New York clubs with Al Haig and Walter Bishop junior . In 1977 he played at a concert at Carnegie Hall for the first time with his future mentor Sonny Rollins . He then studied at the Berklee School of Music (1978/79), then returned to New York to complete his studies at Long Island University . He also worked for Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers , Dave Grusin , Hugh Masekela and Tom Browne until he got a recording deal with GRP Records .

In the mid-1980s he moved to Chicago , where he formed the Bobby Broom Trio in 1990 ; The Deep Blue Organ Trio followed in 1999 , with whom he made a series of recordings under his own name on Delmark , Arista , Criss Cross Jazz , Fantasy and Origin Records , starting with the trio album Stand! (2001), on which he recorded interpretations of 60s / 70s pop and soul classics. Currently (2012) his band consists of Chris Foreman (organ) and Greg Rockingham (drums).

Broom has also been working as a music teacher since 1982, initially in collaboration with Jackie McLean at the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford . He also lectured at the American Conservatory of Music (1986–1990), the Chicago Musical College at Roosevelt University (1990–1994), the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (1987) and at DePaul University (2002–2008). He is currently teaching for the Ravinia Festival Organization in the Music In The Schools / Jazz Mentor Community Outreach Program and at the Thelonious Monk Institute.

Bobby Broom has also worked with Ronnie Cuber , Robert Irving III , David Murray , Max Roach , Stanley Turrentine , Kenny Garrett , Bill Evans , Miles Davis , Dr. Lonnie Smith , Charles Earland , Dr. John , Kenny Burrell , Eric Alexander , Ramsey Lewis and Sadao Watanabe . He currently plays in the Golden Stryker trio with Ron Carter and Mulrew Miller .
