The medal "40. Anniversary of Victory in Great Patriotic War 1941-1945 " ( Russian Юбилейная медаль" Сорок лет Победы в Великой Отечественной войне 1941-1945 гг. » Ûbilejnaâ medal '' Pobedy v Velikoj Otečestvennoj vojne 1941-1945" ) was an award of the Soviet Union , which on April 12, 1985 on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the victory in the German-Soviet war against the German Reich in one step. The medal was mainly awarded to all military and civilian persons who were involved in the victory of the Red Army in the so-called "Great Patriotic War".

The 32 mm diameter gold-plated brass medal shows three people on its obverse in front of a red star in which the Moscow Kremlin and fireworks are depicted. This star in turn covers two laurel branches crossing at the lower semicircle. The middle of the three people is a soldier and holds an RPD machine gun in her left arm . His right arm is stretched out as a sign of victory. Behind him to the left is a woman and behind her to the right is a farmer. The year 1945 1985 can be read above these people . The reverse of the medal, however, shows the five-line inscription: 40 / лет / Победы / в Великой / Отечественной / войне / 1941–1945 гг. ("40 Years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945") and a red star underneath. This lettering is enclosed by the above inscription: УЧАСТНИКУ войны ("the war participant"). The conclusion is a waving ribbon, which is located at the lower edge of the medal.

The medal was worn on the left side of the breast of the entrant on a pentagonal red clasp with a green edge. The left half of the ribbon is dominated by the color combination green-orange-black-orange-black-orange-black-orange. The interim clasp is of the same quality. 11,268,980 medals were awarded.
