Nubya Garcia (* 1991 in London ) is a British jazz musician ( tenor saxophone , flute , composition ) with Caribbean roots.

Live and act

Like her older siblings, Garcia received a solid musical education. She first learned the violin and later also played the viola in the London Schools Symphony Orchestra . She also began playing the saxophone at the age of 10 and soon played in the Camden Jazz Band before being accepted into the junior jazz program at the Royal Academy of Music . She also attended the Tomorrow's Warriors workshops led by Gary Crosby . While still at school, she received a scholarship that enabled her to participate in the five-week summer program at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Back in London, she studied at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance of the Bachelor's degree program in jazz instrumentalists with distinction.

Garcia formed his own bands and played regularly at many music festivals in the UK and abroad, including the London Jazz Festival and the Singapore Jazz Festival . In 2017 she released her debut album Nubya's 5ive ; her Nubya Garcia band opened Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Festival in Sète that same year ; the following year she played at the NYC Winter Jazz Festival and at the Jazzfest Berlin .

On her EP When We Are , released in 2018, Garcia explored how electronics can be used in a live jazz environment; the EP was created as a result of the Steve Reid Innovation Award presented to it . She also worked in the sextet Nérija , for whose album of the same name she also composed, and has toured internationally with Jazz Re: freshed Outernational . She can also be heard on albums by Makaya McCraven ( Universal Beings ), Theon Cross , Moses Boyds Exodus , the Toshio Matsuura Group and Sons of Kemet for Shabaka Hutchings ; Contributions from her can be found on five tracks of Brownswood's We Out Here , a current sampler from the London jazz scene. In 2020 she presented the album Source .
