Stephen Riley
Stephen Riley (born November 19, 1975 in Greenville (North Carolina) ) is an American jazz musician ( tenor saxophone , also soprano saxophone , clarinet ).
Live and act
Riley first learned the violin as a child, then switched to the saxophone at the age of nine. After studying at an art school in Florida, where his mother taught classical singing, he returned to North Carolina to study and played in the local university big band. With the Clifford Brown / Stan Getz Fellowship Award , he received the opportunity to study at Patterson College , New York , which he soon dropped out to work as a professional musician. From the mid-1990s he worked with jazz musicians such as Philip Harper , Marcus Printup , Tete Montoliu , Marcus Roberts and Wynton Marsalis as well as in the Mingus Big Band , in the following years also with Ari Ambrose , Aaron Diehl , Jimmy Greene , Ron McClure and Dave Stryker . In the 2000s he played a number of albums for the SteepleChase Records label . With Neal Caine (double bass) and Billy Hart (drums) he recorded the trio album Hart-beat in 2011 . In the field of jazz he was involved in 38 recording sessions between 1995 and 2019. In Scandinavia he also worked with Snorre Kirk .
