Philip Harper

Philip "Phil" Harper (born May 10, 1965 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is an American jazz trumpeter.

Harper, who grew up in Atlanta , Georgia , learned at the age of ten under the guidance of his brother Danny Harper . He studied at the Hartt School of Music under Jackie McLean and moved to New York at the age of eighteen , where he worked with musicians such as Jimmy Scott , Jimmy McGriff , Betty Carter , Etta Jones , Harry Sweets Edison , Bill Cosby and Cedar Walton .

From 1986 to 1988 he was a member of Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers . He then formed the band Harper Brothers with his brother Winard Harper , which also included Justin Robinson and Stephen Scott . After their dissolution in 1991 he toured with various bands, including a. with the Mingus Big Band ( Gunslinging Birds , 1994) and has taught at several conservatories in Europe.

Harper has worked on more than fifty albums and recorded two solo albums: Soulful Sin and The Thirteenth Moon .
