The Augustaburg Tunnel is a 1,404-meter-long railway tunnel on the new Ebensfeld – Erfurt line near Erfurt between the line kilometers 183.637 and 185.041.

With an overburden of 11 to 22 meters, the structure passes under the Augustaburg ridge five kilometers west of Erfurt city center near the Bischleben district . It was built from 2003 to 2005 and cost a total of around 28 million euros (of which the contract was worth 20.7 million). The tunnel sponsor was Christine Lieberknecht , former chairwoman of the CDU parliamentary group in the Thuringian state parliament and later Prime Minister of the State of Thuringia.

The railway tunnel has a clear height of 9.23 m from the top of the rail and a clear width of 13.64 m, with a mouth profile with a usable cross-sectional area of ​​92 m² above the top of the rail.

The slab track was installed as the superstructure, which merges into a conventional ballast superstructure near the east portal towards Erfurt. The track spacing is 4.5 m. The speed limit in the tunnel is 230 km / h.

The tunnel tube crosses loose rock layers of the upper shell limestone with alternating layers of limestone , mudstone and marlstone . The groundwater level is up to 10 m above the tunnel roof , so the tube is watertight .

history

Construction work

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Augustaberg construction section of the new line was celebrated on September 11, 2002. The tunnel was built by Hochtief Construction AG and Alpine Bau GmbH .

The double-shell tunnel was excavated mechanically with a tunnel excavator , sometimes with blasting, from the northern portal between October 2003 and October 2005 with a cross-sectional area of ​​around 160 m² . The cross-section was divided into a dome, bench and bottom and secured with a shotcrete lining according to the new Austrian tunnel construction method. The tunnel excavation was approximately 200,000 m³. A total of 1364 m was excavated by mining, 40 m using the open cut method.

The breakthrough at the southern portal took place in August 2004, the inner shell was manufactured from January 2005.

Installation

On June 10, 2017, a rescue exercise with 690 emergency services and 121 people assumed to be injured took place in the tunnel. About 30 people were assumed to be unable to walk. More than 100 emergency vehicles were also involved in the exercise.

It was the sixth of eleven planned rescue exercises at VDE 8.1.

Rescue concept

According to the tunnel guideline of the Federal Railway Authority , the tunnel structure u. a. Via rescue areas at both portals and an emergency exit at km 184.077, 440 m from the southern tunnel portal. This exit has a lock and a storage space and leads to the outside via a 19 m long cross tunnel and a 22 m deep staircase system .

Roads connecting the public road network were built at both rescue stations. Extinguishing water tanks with a volume of 100 m³ each were installed at the portals. The slab track is passable for road vehicles.
