history

On April 1, 2008, the electronic gazette of the European Union published the advance notice about the planned award of construction for construction section 3212 ( Southern Thuringian Forest ) of the new line, which includes the Masserberg tunnel. For the 2.3 km long section, to which the neighboring Rehberg tunnel and the Dunkeltal and Rehtal bridges also belong, an award amount (excluding VAT) of 55 million euros was calculated.

On 25 August 2010, the tunnel was inaugurated as the eleventh of the 14 tunnels of the route lying in Thuringia was injured . The Thuringian state parliament member Sabine Doht acted as tunnel sponsor . The total investment is 23 million euros. The tunnel breakthrough was on March 31, 2011. It was officially celebrated on May 4, 2011.

The tunnel was driven from north to south using the New Austrian Tunneling Method . A total of 226,000 m³ excavated material were round incurred, which (at the landfill Masserberg East ' "58 ° 50 31  N , 57 10 ° 59'"  O ) was disposed of.

The construction work should be completed in spring 2013. On September 28, 2013, the completion of the structure was celebrated with an open tunnel day, around 2000 residents and interested visitors took part. On March 25, 2017, a rescue exercise took place in the tunnel with around 30 people believed to be injured. Another rescue exercise took place on May 20, 2017, with 60 "injured" people and 350 emergency services.

On February 28, 2019, the Federal Administrative Court decided on a lawsuit from the State of Thuringia and the district of Sonneberg on the size of various rescue areas along the route. At a rescue area in the Blessberg tunnel , the court ruled that the plaintiffs were right a. in relation to the Masserberg tunnel, however, the action was dismissed.
