In + Out Records is an independent music label founded by Frank Kleinschmidt in Germany in 1988 , specializing in jazz recordings .

history

Kleinschmidt's mother, Gabriele, has been organizing European tours for several well-known and respected jazz artists since 1974. Already at the age of 16 he accompanied a tour of Elvin Jones on behalf of his mother . In addition, he founded the label to market current recordings of the acts. In + Out Records developed into a fruitful joint venture : The sound carrier promoted the touring concerts and vice versa.

From the beginning, the label aimed to produce sound and video recordings of innovative contemporary jazz music using advanced technology. The company, which is based in Freiburg im Breisgau , was named after an album by Joe Henderson from 1964 that Kleinschmidt particularly likes. In the first few years, the label focused on Airto Moreira and Flora Purim on records by Grant Calvin Weston , James Blood Ulmer , Woody Shaw , Nat Adderley and Buster Williams . From 1990 European artists such as Urszula Dudziak , Lucas Heidepriem , Hans Koller , Jasper van't Hof , Aladár Pege as well as Rolf and Joachim Kühn joined them. Recordings of Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy , the all-star formation Roots (with Arthur Blythe , Sam Rivers , Nathan Davis , Chico Freeman and Don Pullen ), Larry Coryell , Karl Berger , Art Blakey and Johnny Griffin were also released . In recent years, recordings by Sun Ra Arkestra , Nicholas Payton , Ron Carter , Simone Zanchini , Amina Figarova , Billy Cobham , Lynne Arriale , Willy Ketzer , Christian Muthspiel / Steve Swallow have been released on In + Out Records . Paul Kuhn was associated with the label exclusively for his return to jazz and thus his entire "second career".

In + Out Records is one of the few record companies that still produces records : In addition to CDs, audiophile pressings are produced in limited editions on premium vinyl .
