Grant Calvin Weston (born June 6, 1959 in Philadelphia ) is an American funk jazz drummer .

Live and act

Even as a child, Weston was recognized in the Philadelphia jazz clubs because of his extraordinary motor skills. At the age of 17 he became a member of Ornette Coleman's Prime Time , with whose band Prime Time he recorded records like Of Human Feelings (1979) and went on an international tour until 1987. Then he belonged to the groups of James Blood Ulmer . In 1990 he became a member of John Lurie's Lounge Lizards . With their percussionist Billy Martin he recorded the album Percussion Duets in 1995 . With Eyvind Kang and Kato Hideki he founded the trio Dying Grounds , which also expanded into Socket with Shelley Hirsch and Billy Martin . The sextet Big Three followed in 2002, trying to synthesize the sonic conceptions of Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman and Pharoah Sanders. He also worked on projects by Marc Ribot , Christy Doran , Derek Bailey , John Zorn and James Carter . In 2008 he toured Europe with Jean-Paul Bourelly and Melvin Gibbs , as well as Vernon Reid and Jamaaladeen Tacuma .
