Melvin Gibbs (* in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American fusion bassist, composer and producer.

Gibbs was initially interested in percussion before he became enthusiastic about the bass and took lessons from Reggie Workman . First he played with Alphonia Tims. He studied at Medgar Evers College , where he met the guitarist Vernon Reid , and the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. During the 1980s he worked mostly in the Decoding Society of the drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson , among others with Vernon Reid, but also in Jackson's project Power Tools , which also included guitarist Bill Frisell . At the same time he became known as a member of the Defunkt formation , on whose first records, such as Thermonuclear Sweat , he was involved. From the mid-1980s he also worked with Sonny Sharrock and also with John Zorn , such as his Morricone concept album The Big Gundown . Gibbs co-led the band Eye and I and is a member of the Black Rock Coaltion .

From 1994 to 1998 he was a member of the avant-garde band Rollins Band ; He played in the band again in 2006 when it was briefly revived. Gibbs was also involved in recordings with hip-hop artists such as dead prez , the Brazilian musicians Caetano Veloso and Marisa Monte , as well as with Eddie Palmieri , Femi Kuti , Marc Ribot and Elliott Sharp . He also worked as a producer for Arto Lindsay and DJ Logic .

Gibbs co-founded the punk-funk All-Stars , which also featured James Blood Ulmer , Joseph Bowie , Vernon Reid and Ronald Shannon Jackson. Gibbs led the band Harriet Tubman with guitarist Brandon Ross and drummer JT Lewis . He is currently working on the projects "Elevated Entity" and "Melvin Runs the Hoodoo Down", with ex Miles Davis guitarist Pete Cosey and keyboardists John Medeski , James Hurt and Mark Batson . In 2008 he toured Europe with Jean-Paul Bourelly and Calvin Weston .
