Defunkt is an American funk-jazz band founded in New York City in 1978 around trombonist and singer Joseph Bowie , a brother of jazz trumpeter Lester Bowie .
history
Defunkt emerged in the late 1970s from former colleagues of James Chance . Announced as Joe Bowie and the Defunked or The Defunked at the first appearances in New York's Squat Theater , the band has survived to the present day. Defunkt's music combines free jazz and bebop elements with funk and deconstructs disco clichés and rigid jazz templates.
In the course of their career the band experienced some line-up changes and sometimes played in big band format. For some time Vernon Reid , who later became a guitarist for Living Color , was part of Bowie's ensemble.
In 2015 the band toured under the name Defunkt Downtown in the '80s with the same line-up as when they were founded about 35 years ago.
