Kenny Washington (born May 29, 1958 in Brooklyn ) is an American jazz drummer .

Washington, who grew up in Staten Island , began playing drums when he was seven. He was a student of the drummer Rudy Collins and studied at LaGuardia High School for Music & Art . As a teenager he worked with Lee Konitz , with whose nonet he made his first recordings in 1977. From 1978 to 1979 he appeared with Betty Carter , the following year with Johnny Griffin , and later with Tommy Flanagan . He was the sideman of numerous jazz musicians, including Dizzy Gillespie , Clark Terry and Bill Charlap, and has participated in hundreds of sessions and recordings.

Washington is also an expert on jazz history, who contributed to the reissues of jazz classics Art Blakeys and Count Basies and emerged as the author of liner notes. He teaches drums at the New School in New York and is the presenter of the jazz radio station WBGO . Bassist Reggie Washington is his brother.
