Rudy Collins
Rudolph Alexander Collins (born July 24, 1934 in New York City , † August 15, 1988 ) was an American jazz drummer .
Collins first played the trombone, then turned to drums. He studied this instrument from 1953-57 with Sam Ulano . In 1952 he became a professional musician and played first with Hot Lips Page and in 1953 with Cootie Williams , then with Eddie Bonnemere from 1953 to 1956 - as well as appearances with Johnny Smith , JJ Johnson and Kai Winding and Roy Eldridge (1956). Played for Austin Powell in 1957/58 - next to Cab Calloway and Carmen McRae (1958), 1959 for Cecil Taylor and from late 1959 and 1960 for Herbie Mann . Collins played with Dizzy Gillespie from 1962 to 1967 , toured with Ray Bryant , Kenny Burrell , Woody Herman in 1967/68 ; played in 1969 with Junior Mance , Lloyd Price , Harry Belafonte . Was active in theater orchestras around 1970 and has taught drums ever since; 1972 with Earl Hines ; 1973 in New York clubs with Duke Pearson and Lee Konitz ; 1974 with Randy Weston and Count Basie's North American tour , 1975 with Cleo Laine / John Dankworth .
