Sam Ulano

Sam Ulano (born August 8, 1920 in New York City , † January 1, 2014 ) was an American jazz drummer and drum teacher.

Live and act

Ulano started playing drums at the age of thirteen. He studied with Jules Wischick , Aubrey Brooks and Irving Torgman (one of the drummers at Radio City Music Hall ), David Gussikoff (who played on many Broadway shows), Al Bromell of the NBC Radio Orchestra and Gus Schmell . He studied for four years at the Manhattan School of Music with Alfred Freizie and Fred Albright .

At the age of seventeen he opened his first drum studio and began to write his first lesson letters and books; Over the years there are reportedly more than 2,500, including monthly periodicals such as Sam Ulano's Monthly Progressive Study Charts for Drummers. He won a gold medal in music at James Monroe High School in the Bronx . During his military service he taught a drum corps. In addition to his textbooks, he also made numerous audio and video recordings. His students include John Sarracco , Alan Schwartzberg , Joe Bonadio , Marvin Smitty Smith , Rudy Collins , Mousey Alexander , Ron Tierno , Dave Baily , Billy Taylor , Stu Martin , Charlie Perry , Stan Spector , Russ Moy , Bill Rotella , Glen Weber , Fred Klatz , Les Jenkins , Barry Altschul and many others.

As a musician, Ulano is known in New York as "Mr. Rhythm". He has played for students from more than 500 city schools, has appeared on television shows by Gary Moore , Ernie Kovacs , Joe Franklin and Steve Allen's Tonight Show , and was a member of Sol Yaged's Quartet for fourteen years . Until 1980 he performed with his own quartet in the New York Gaslight Club . From 1985 he led the group Sam Ulano and the Red Blazers at the New York jazz club Red Blazer , where he received the Drum Master Award in 1997 . In the field of jazz he was involved in twelve recording sessions between 1956 and 2005, with Moondog ( Caribea , Prestige 1956), Tony Parenti , Sol Yaged, his own band Sammy Ulano's Red Blazers (1999) and most recently in a duo with pianist Steve Elmer ( Brothers in Swing ).

His son, sound engineer Mark Ulano, received an Oscar in 1998 for his work on the film Titanic .
