The nature reserve Pennewitzer Teiche and Unteres Wohlrosetal is a nature reserve in Thuringia , it is located north of Gehren in the Ilm district and in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district . The nature reserve has a total size of 419.2 hectares.
Neighboring places are Langewiesen in the west, Gräfinau-Angstedt in the north, Pennewitz in the east and Jesuborn and Gehren in the south. The extension of the nature reserve is about five kilometers in an east-west direction and three kilometers in a north-south direction.
The nature reserve Pennewitzer Teiche and Unteres Wohlrosetal is fed by the rivers Lohme and Ilm in the west and the Wohlrose in the east and comprises around 100 ponds (blast holes) and ponds. In the southwest of the area is the Lohmetal with some ponds, the Heideteich and the Löschwasserteiche directly on the outskirts of Gehren. In the northwest, in the Ilm valley, are the Herrenteiche , in the middle the Esbachteich ( water lily pond ) and in the east on the Wohlrose the two-cone ponds and the Sorger ponds . The forest area Schönheide lies between the individual pond groups , in which there are still numerous water-filled ponds (blast holes). The high water input favored the development of peat forest areas.
