The Veronikaberg (originally Frohnsberg ) is a 552.2 meter high mountain near Ilmenau in Thuringia .

location

The mountain is partly in the Martinroda district, the eastern part in Heyda district - today a district of Ilmenau . Topographically, the Veronikaberg represents the southernmost tip of the Reinsberge in the southeast of the Ohrdrufer Platte , which merges directly south of the mountain and not far east of the ridge into the flat, undulating Paulinzella foreland . Although it only protrudes 150 meters from the area, it looks very dominant to the south and west, as it drops off steeply here. To the northeast, the mountain merges into the somewhat higher Heydaer Berg with the 605  m high neck cap .

meaning

The Veronikaberg is a landmark of Martinroda. It is known for its diverse flora and fauna.

Geology, flora and fauna

The mountain consists of shell limestone and is one of the few mountains in the area with pure beech trees , which provide a special color in autumn. The European yew has been growing here for centuries, and in earlier times its processing ensured a modest prosperity for the surrounding villages or their lords. The climate on Veronikaberg is warmer and drier than that of the surrounding area. It is a popular hiking destination and the scene of numerous regional sagas and myths.

Most of the mountain is under nature protection. The 116.1 hectare nature reserve (NSG) was established in 1961. Floristically remarkable is the largest Thuringian occurrence of the Alsatian summer arum in the area. The NSG houses two total reserve areas .

Origin of name

The name goes back to a corruption of the original name. In 1538 the mountain was named Frohnbergk bei Mertenroda . Later it was called Frohnberg , 1703 Veronberg , from which the current name became.
