The wood of God is a mixed deciduous forest and nature reserve in the Ilm district , Thuringia .

geography

The wood of God is located 100 meters south-east of Espenfeld and 3 km south-west of Arnstadt at an altitude of 390 to 451 m above sea level. NHN . The nature reserve is located in the area of the edge of the Ohrdrufer Platte on a gently sloping northern limestone slope . The lime banks are up to 6 meters thick in places. The wood of God covers an area of 59.27 hectares, 20.64 hectares of which are designated as total reserves .

biology

The wood of God is a mixed forest with oaks , hornbeams and service berries . The nature reserve is of particular importance due to its remarkable flora and fauna with a number of protected, endangered and plant-geographically significant species.

Particularly noteworthy are the downy oak on the northern edge of its distribution area, the Austrian rib seed , mountain riding grass , the different -leaved flat pea , the long-leaved hare's ear , the knot bellflower , the lady's slipper and the stately orchid . A total of 11 Red List species were identified.

The nature reserve is also noteworthy for its fauna and flora, as well as in terms of endangered species. Among other things, the beetle species cross-banded wood weevil (Acalles hypocritus) was discovered in God's wood in 1837 .

history

In earlier centuries the wood of God was cultivated first as coppice forest and later as medium forest. When the extraordinary biodiversity was recognized, the area was secured as a protected area with 49 hectares on August 12, 1942. In 1957, the Erfurt District Council gave the area the status of "forest protection area" and in 1959 29.99 hectares were designated as a total reserve. Two years later on March 30, 1961, it was finally designated as a nature reserve with a total size of 59.27 hectares.
