description

Pleurospermum austriacum ( herbarium specimen of the stem leaf)

Vegetative characteristics

The Austrian rib seed is a biennial to perennial herbaceous plant . It reaches heights of growth of up to 1.5 meters and dies after the seeds ripen. It is knotty at the top with short side branches and bald or below it also papilose-short-haired.

The leaves are double (to triple) incised, the pinnate sections are long and have few teeth on the edge. They pull themselves wing-like down on the petiole and are densely papilose at the edge.

Generative characteristics

The relatively large double-gold inflorescence has numerous bracts like the umbel . These are at least pinnate at the end umbels and shaped similar to the leaves. The hermaphrodite flowers are fivefold. The white petals are about 3 millimeters long and not sanded.

The fruit is egg-shaped with a length of up to 10 millimeters and a diameter of up to 6 millimeters.

The flowering period extends from June to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Location requirements

Pleurospermum austriacum grows individually or in loose stands in light-rich to partially shaded, lime-rich, basic areas. It prefers perennial and lawn communities. According to Erich Oberdorfer , it grows in Central Europe mainly in Origanetalia societies, also in the Calamagrostio Pinetum, in the Alnetum incanae, in the Carpinion and in high altitudes in the Adenostylion.

General distribution

The Austrian rib seed occurs in Europe in the Alps, the Balkans, the Carpathian Mountains and rarely in the Central European mountains. There are isolated individual occurrences in Sweden and in non-alpine Germany. The species does not occur outside of Europe. Its distribution area includes France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Slovakia, Poland, Belarus and Estonia.

Distribution in Germany

In Germany, Pleurospermum austriacum can only be found in the Alps and in the foothills of the Alps, and very rarely in the Swabian Alb , Franconia and Thuringia. In the Allgäu Alps, Pleurospermum austriacum rises on the southern slope of the Kegelkopf in Bavaria to an altitude of 1850 meters.

ecology

The Austrian rib seed is a hemicryptophyte .

Since the plant dies after the seeds ripen, constant rejuvenation must be carried out with newly emerging seedlings. If this rejuvenation does not take place, the population can go out in a short time.
