history

A favorable transport connection once ran through Espenfeld from the direction of Arnstadt via the Thuringian Forest near Oberhof . Therefore, in early historical times, the location was important for cross-mountain traffic. An archaeologically researched Slavic burial ground from the 10th to 12th centuries confirms this.

Fortified church of St. Crucis

Espenfeld was first mentioned in 1273 as "Espenveld". Other mentions are 1412 as "Espenfeild", 1417 as "Espenfeylt" and 1453 as "Espenfelt". The church of the place is a fortified church in the Romanesque choir tower church style. It was built in the middle of the 13th century. From 1599 to 1920 Espenfeld belonged to Schwarzburg-Arnstadt and Schwarzburg-Sondershausen ( suzerainty ).

At the end of the Second World War there was a branch of the Ohrdruf forced labor camp near Espenfeld , where the prisoners were housed in tents, possibly also in barracks, and were used for the construction work in the Jonastal . After Thuringia was captured by US troops, around 200 NSDAP members arrested in Arnstadt had to transfer 96 murdered prisoners from a mass grave to individual graves on May 13, 1945. This resulted in a cemetery of honor for concentration camp prisoners that still exists today. From 1970 to 1990 there were in the former school of the village an exhibition on the satellite camp Jonastal of the Buchenwald concentration camp .

On January 24, 1974 Espenfeld was incorporated into the community of Siegelbach . This in turn was incorporated into the city of Arnstadt together with Espenfeld on April 14, 1994.
