Wipfra is a district of the city of Arnstadt in the central Ilm district in Thuringia .

geography

Wipfra is located in the middle of the Ilm district, about ten kilometers from Arnstadt in the north and Ilmenau in the south. The village is located on the Wipfra , into which the Prolle coming from the west joins. Wipfra is the center of a relatively flat area that is partly used for arable farming and partly wooded with pine trees . This area is bounded by the Reinsbergen in the west and north, the Willinger Berg and the Sandberg in the east and the Heyda dam in the south. Neighboring places are Schmerfeld in the west, Kettmannshausen in the north and Neuroda in the east.

history

Wipfra was first mentioned in a document in 1348. Wipfra Castle stood on the northern outskirts of Wipfra on the right of the path to Reinsfeld. The Counts of Schwarzburg were the owners. They had to keep the castle open for the city of Erfurt . The castle site can still be seen as a flat hill of ruins with remains of the moat.

In 1731 the village and the neighboring Schmerfeld came to the Ilmenau office , which until 1920 belonged to Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach . That is why the Weimar Minister Johann Wolfgang von Goethe toured the area in 1785, praising its scenic beauty and prosperity. In 1922, the village was incorporated into the Arnstadt district as a municipality . Between 1952 and 1994 it belonged to the Arnstadt district in the Erfurt district and since 1994 to the Ilm district . In the same year the community Wipfratal was formed, which the village joined. On January 1, 2019, Wipfratal was incorporated into Arnstadt.

Interior view of the fortified church Wipfra

The fortified church of the village, which dates back to the 12th century and partly still has Romanesque features, is worth seeing . It stands on a hill in the center of the village and is surrounded by a three meter high wall. On July 25, 1685, Heinrich Bach played the church organ. In the church there is also a rare, life-size wall painting of “ Adam and Eve in Paradise”. There is also a baptismal font from 1596 and a bell from 1682 in the church . After three years of renovation, the church was consecrated again in 2004. It is subordinate to the parish of Neuroda and is Protestant .
