The Sandberg is 477.3  m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the north of the Paulinzellaer Vorland ( Thuringian Basin (with edge plates) ) in the Ilm district in Thuringia . It is located about ten kilometers northeast of the city of Ilmenau between Neuroda in the west and Traßdorf in the east. This means that it is also on the watershed between Unstrut in the west and Ilm in the east.

The mountain got its name from the sand deposits in the area. It is partly forested with pines, but partly also agricultural land. The high-speed line Nuremberg – Erfurt crosses under the mountain with the 1320 meter long Sandberg tunnel . A five-lane ramp of the federal motorway 71 between the junctions Arnstadt-Süd and Ilmenau-Ost leads up to the Sandberg , with almost 100 meters of altitude being overcome.
