The Paulinzellaer Vorland (also: Paulinzellaer Buntsandsteinland ) is a wooded mountain region north of the Thuringian Forest in the districts of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt and Ilm-Kreis in Thuringia ( Germany ). It is named after Paulinzella , a town in the area .
The landscape stands out from the neighboring landscapes due to the red sandstone .
Geographical location
The landscape running in a west-east direction is about 26 kilometers long and a maximum of 10 kilometers wide and borders directly on the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest and the Thuringian Slate Mountains to the east . The Paulinzellaer Vorland is located between Königsee in the south, Ilmenau in the southwest, Stadtilm in the northwest, Bad Blankenburg in the east.
Natural classification
The Paulinzella foreland, which occupies a total area of approx. 202 km², represents the main unit 473 within the natural spatial main unit group Thuringian Basin (with edge plates) .
Neighboring landscapes and natural spaces are:
- Thuringian Forest and Thuringian Slate Mountains in the south
- Reinsberge in the west
- Ilm-Saale-Platte in the north
- Saale valley in the east
According to the purely inner- Thuringian classification The natural spaces of Thuringia of the Thuringian State Institute for Environment and Geology in Jena (TLUG) the unit 2.5 Paulinzella red sandstone woodland is given as 187 km².
Geology and nature
The geological subsoil consists of lower and middle red sandstone . In the northeast, the landscape is bounded by the Eichenberg – Gotha – Saalfelder fault zone from the shell limestone of the Ilm-Saale-Platte, at the southeast edge there is a narrow strip of Zechstein . In the west it still includes the eastern roofing of the Reinsberge made of red sandstone.
Because of the poor quality of the soil and the waterlogging that occurs on the plateaus, the Paulinzella foreland is heavily forested (mostly with coniferous forests), including the Paulinzella forest . Agriculture with a lot of grassland is practiced in the valleys and flatter mountain areas. In the Paulinzella foreland lies the LSG Rinne-Rottenbachtal , in some cases there are still raised bogs with a special flora.
The landscape, which still has an average height of 400 to 500 meters above sea level, is partly slab-like and is severely disrupted by the Ilm , Wipfra and (Königseer) Rinne and their tributaries. There are also numerous ponds in the valleys.
mountains
The main mountains are:
- Horseshoe (528.3 m), east of Gräfinau-Angstedt
- Wümberg (503.2 m), east of Wümbach
- Finsterlohkopf (501.1 m), south of Paulinzella
- Brandberg (498 m), near Gräfinau-Angstedt
- Wolfsgraben (466.6 m), north of Milbitz
- Eichberg (422.4 m), northeast of Rottenbach
- Heideberg (381.1 m), north of Watzdorf
The Zeugenberg Singer Berg (583 m), south of the Eichenberg-Gotha-Saalfeld fault zone, is to be added to the neighboring Ilm-Saale-Platte.
