Reinhard Zöllner

Reinhard Zöllner (born July 22, 1961 in Bloemfontein , South Africa ) is a German historian and Japanologist.

Zöllner studied history and Latin in Kiel as well as Japanese studies in Hamburg and at the Sophia University in Tokyo / Japan . In 1992 he did his doctorate in Kiel with Hermann Kulke and Werner Paravicini . In 1997 Zöllner received his habilitation in Japanese Studies in Trier . In the same year he became professor for social and economic history of modern Japan at the University of Halle-Wittenberg . From 1999 to 2008 he held the only German chair for the history of East Asia at the University of Erfurt . From 2003 to 2004 Zöllner was visiting professor at the University of Michigan (USA). He turned down an offer at the University of Zurich . Since April 2008 he has been Professor of Japanese Studies at the University of Bonn .

His main area of ​​work is the history of early modern and modern Japan as well as the history of East Asia. He particularly researches the development of modern perceptions of the world, mentalities and ways of life against the background of the cultural and religious traditions of Japan. For him, the active participation of the Japanese in shaping modernity , in particular their leading role in the construction of the modern world region of East Asia , is in the foreground.

Zöllner publishes the Erfurt series on the history of East Asia .
