The Georgian mountain cattle is a land breed from Georgia .

Breeding history

The Georgian mountain cattle is a subgroup of the Georgian high mountain cattle ; its exact origin is not known.

Characteristics

The color is mostly black, black and white or can be red and white. The Georgian mountain cattle are small, the constitution is petite and they have a compact build. The head is light and the neck thin and short, the chest deep and the back straight. The udder of the Georgian mountain cattle is small and glandular. Its skin is thin and elastic. Thanks to its physique, it is perfectly adapted to the harsh Caucasus climate and high mountain pastures. The cattle are characterized by disease resistance. The Georgian mountain cattle provide between 120 and 200 kg of milk with 4 to 5% fat during the two-month suckling period, only in suckler cow husbandry. The meat quality is unsatisfactory. The weight for cows is 220 to 280 kg, bulls have a greater weight with 270 to 370 kg. With adequate feeding there is a large increase in performance for milk and for meat.

Occurrence

In 1980 the number of Georgian mountain cattle was 80,000. They occur in 15 Rajons in the west and east of Georgia.
