Churches
There are several churches in Duino, some of which are built on late antique foundations. In addition, the place has several castles and castle-like palaces .
Duino Castle
The most famous complex, the New Palace , which is owned and inhabited by the Karl Prinz von Thurn und Taxis family today, shows, among other things, the famous Palladian staircase . Some halls of the castle have now been opened to the public. You can visit a pianoforte , on which Franz Liszt made music during his stay here, and the castle park, with a wonderful view of the Gulf of Trieste .
The Counts of Chambord, Empress Sisi and Emperor Franz Josef I , Archduke Maximilian with Charlotte , Eleonora Duse , Johann Strauss , Gabriele D'Annunzio , Paul Valéry , Mark Twain , Victor Hugo and Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria often attended the castle Stay. The physicist Ludwig Boltzmann also died in Duino in 1906 .
The castle came through Countess Theresa Maria von Thurn-Hofer and Valsassina († 1893), whose family had owned it since the 16th century, to their daughter Marie Princess zu Hohenlohe , married Princess von Thurn and Taxis , and the patron of Rainer Maria Rilkes . Today Duino belongs to her descendant Prince Carlo della Torre e Tasso (Thurn und Taxis), Duca di Duino.
Rilke's Duinese Elegies are named after Duino Castle, some of which were created here. The Rilke trail along the rocks between Sistiana and Duino reminds of the poet , from which there is a panoramic view of the bay of Sistiana, the Gulf of Trieste and the castle.
The government of Zone A of the Free State of Trieste (1947/1954) had its seat in Duino Castle. The United World College of the Adriatic, founded in 1982 by UNESCO , is also located here .
Mithraeum
Halfway between Aurisina and San Giovanni di Duino is a 1965 discovered Mithraeum in a natural cave that can be visited on some days.
