The Rilkeweg ( Sentiero Rilke ) is a hiking trail between Duino and Sistiana in Italy , which is named after Rainer Maria Rilke .

The poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926) wrote the ten Duino elegies that made Duino and its cliffs famous around the world during his stays at Duino Castle between 1912 and 1922 .

The castle, which is still owned by the Thurn und Taxis family today, was the location of a literary salon at the beginning of the 20th century , where, in addition to Rainer Maria Rilke, Franz Liszt , Richard Strauss , Paul Valéry , Victor Hugo , Gabriele D'Annunzio, among others , Mark Twain and Eleonora Duse and members of the imperial family as Archduke Franz Ferdinand , Empress Elisabeth and Emperor Franz Joseph I participated. The Rilkeweg bore this name early on because of Rilke's long walks along the steep coast to Sistiana .

In 1987 this path was paved, secured and expanded on behalf of the Province of Trieste and the municipality of Duino-Aurisina. It was covered with gravel over a length of almost two kilometers, equipped with signs and secured with wooden fences at the most dangerous places and some spectacular viewpoints of the Gulf of Trieste . The hiking trail, the 107 hectare pine grove and the cliffs of Duino have been under nature protection since 1996.

From April 2013, the Rilkeweg was only partially accessible, as part of the area on which it extends is privately owned. It has been open again since November 8, 2015.
