history
Until 15 BC The area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg , which was the main town for the entire north-east Noricum . With the incorporation of Noricum into the Imperium Romanum under Emperor Augustus , the area around today's Gutenstein also fell under the rule of the Romans and was initially in the province of Noricum, after changing the borders from 8 AD in the province of Pannonia .
The place at the foot of Gutenstein Castle, built towards the end of the 12th century (first documented mention in 1220) initially remained meaningless. In 1321 Frederick the Fair , who chose the castle as his favorite place to stay, elevated Gutenstein to the market.
In 1487 Gutenstein came under the rule of Matthias Corvinus , and in 1490 again under the Habsburgs. Gutenstein survived the Turkish invasions in 1529 and 1532 comparatively unmolested. In 1576 the Habsburgs sold the castle and the Gutenstein estate to the Hoyos family . Emperor Ferdinand II elevates the property to a county in 1628. In 1661 the market judge Sebastian Schlager brought a miraculous picture of the Virgin Mary to the Mariahilfberg, on which a monastery was built from 1679 to 1685, and a pilgrimage church in 1688, which was rebuilt after a fire in 1727.
In 1671 the Hoyos family began building their castle in the valley. The poet Ferdinand Raimund came regularly to Gutenstein from 1825, where he was buried in 1836. After the administrative reform of 1848, the community of Gutenstein took over the administration from the Counts of Hoyos. In 1877 the Gutenstein Railway was opened, which was used for the 19th century. established industrial plants (iron processing, sawmills and coal piles) was important. In 1912 the Gutenstein water pipeline was built; Gutenstein then developed into a tourist destination.
Towards the end of the Second World War , Gutenstein was briefly a frontline area and after the end of the war it belonged to the Soviet occupation zone until 1955.
The Gutenstein Raimundspiele in Bleichgarten was founded in 1993 and resumed in 2000. Summer musical courses have been held since 1995, first under the name "Cartusiana", then as Gutenstein's master classes .
In October 2018, a group of young people with Theresa Steininger and her company "wohnwagon "settled in the former inn Gutensteinerhof. Money was raised to renovate the house. The construction of caravans and houses is planned, as well as the renovation of surrounding houses in order to offer self-sufficient living for rent in terms of electricity, water and heat.
