Peter Kempny (born February 5, 1862 in Vienna , † May 20, 1906 in Gutenstein ) was an Austrian physician, composer and entomologist.

Life

After graduating from the humanistic Mariahilfer Gymnasium at the University of Vienna, Peter Kempny studied medicine Sub Auspiciis Imperatoris. At the age of 25 he opened his doctor's practice in Gutenstein and two years later had architect Julius Deininger - with whose two sons he played tennis - build a bathing establishment with a spa and two large heated open-air swimming pools (today's community pool) from his own resources.

During his medical studies he was already doing insect research (reticulated winged myrmeleonids ), initially only in his free time. While still a student, he published scientific papers and soon gained great recognition as a scientist in this field. Much of his research has been published by the Vienna Zoological and Botanical Society . He is well known in the international community for the discovery of numerous insect species named after him.

He also looked after the spa guests as a tennis player, chess master and with his excellent pianistic performances for social highlights. He left a number of compositions (songs, choral works, 2 symphonies, piano works, etc.). These were long thought to be lost. It was not until 2012 that over 100 scores were found again. In recent years several of his works have been performed publicly in Gutenstein, Vienna and France.

He died in Gutenstein at the age of 44. The community dedicated a grave of honor to him because of his great services. In the vestibule of today's community pool, a plaque commemorates Dr. Peter Kempny.
