The Raimundspiele Gutenstein (2007 to 2015 temporarily Gutenstein Festival ) are a series of events in Gutenstein in Lower Austria that has been held annually during the summer months since 1993. Until 2007 a piece by Ferdinand Raimund was played every year . From 2008 to 2011 there was an alternative program of musicals and various music events. Since 2012 pieces by Raimund have been played again.

The venue was chosen because Raimund had spent many years in Gutenstein and was also buried here.

history

The Raimundspiele Gutenstein was founded in 1993 by Peter Janisch and the then Gutenstein mayor Adi Reuscher. In the opening year, an evening with scenes and songs from Raimund's works was performed. In the following years a piece by Ferdinand Raimund was played. Directed by Peter Janisch (in Der Verschwender , Der Alpenkönig und der misanthrope , Der Bauer als Millionär and Der Barometeracher auf der Zauberinsel ) and Marcus Strahl (in Der Diamant des Geisterkönig and Die gefesselte Phantasy ). Moisasur's Zauberfluch and The ominous Magic Crown were not performed in this first phase of the Raimundspiele. All performances took place in the open air.

In 1999 Peter Janisch's contract as director of the Raimundspiele ran out. The new artistic director was Ernst Wolfram Marboe , who transferred the performances from the open meadow to a newly constructed theater tent. In cooperation with the ORF , all plays by Ferdinand Raimund were performed from 2000 under the direction of Ernst Wolfram Marboe. The cast of the leading roles has also been similar over the years. Some actors, such as Ernst Grissemann , Christian Futterknecht , Erika Mottl , Rita Nikodim and Gottfried Riedl , were in all or almost all of the cast.

The performances were now carried out in a tent that could accommodate up to 1,000 visitors, so they were independent of the weather. In 2005, around 12,000 spectators attended the games, which gave the Piestingtal a strong economic boost .

With the change from the Raimundstücks, Marboe also gave up his direction. At the end of the 2007 season, Ernst Neuspiel took over the management of the games and expanded the performance framework beyond Raimund to include music theater. However, the games recently suffered from falling capacity utilization. From 2013 to 2015 Ferdinand Raimund was played again under Isabella Gregor's artistic director . Satisfied with the artistic result, the commercial result did not meet the expectations of the community. The contract with Isabella Gregor expired in mid-2015. The municipality took over the commercial management itself again in the person of the mayor Michael Kreuzer and advertised the position of the artistic director again. Chamber actress Andrea Eckert was able to convince the jury from nine applicants . At the end of 2015 she took over the management of the Raimundspiele.

The new production of Ferdinand Raimund's The Farmer as Millionaire planned for 2020 and the resumption of Felix Mitterer's Little Brothers Fein was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
