history

As a project to combat high unemployment, roads were built in the interwar period. The (temporary bemautete) road to the Gutenstein Alps belonging Hohe Wand was opened on 3 December 1932 (after breaking ceremony on October 19, 1931) and now opens up the Hohe Wand Nature Park .

200 meters west of the end point of the street at that time (former Gasthof Stickler , today at residential building 2724 Stollhof, Hohe-Wand-Straße 71), the Engelbertkirche was built in 1934/35 according to the plans of the architect Robert Kramreiter (1905-1965) as a religious monument of the Patriotic Front built for its dead leader Engelbert Dollfuß (1892–1934) and inaugurated on July 21, 1935 by Theodor Cardinal Innitzer (1875–1955). The church, including the Dollfuss Memorial , was restored in 1988 with the help of Otto Rinder († 2011; age: 81).

Engelbert Dollfuss is shown together with Jesus and martyrs on a wall painting by Max Frey (1902–1955) in the lower church. The Pietà comes from Viktor Hammer .
