The Falkenstein Nature Park is located in southern Lower Austria in the Schwarzatal north of Schwarzau in the mountains in the Gutenstein Alps .

An area of 17 hectares on the western slopes of the 1013 meter high Falkenstein am Handlesberg is protected as a nature reserve and nature park . The nature park is freely accessible at all times.

Natural sights

The nature park offers "the Rax – Schneeberg area in miniature".

The peculiarity are the karst phenomena occurring in the limestone , in particular the karst spring of the Klafterbach , a tributary of the Schwarza , and some caves such as the Bärenloch , the men's and the women's grotto (the latter two located just outside the nature park).

The flora is typical for the eastern alpine border region and can be seen in an alpine garden , where typical representatives for lower regions (valleys) were planted (the high alpine counterpart is on the nearby Rax near the Otto house ).

Built sights

At the main entrance (from Schwarzau) there is a kiosk with information material. In the immediate vicinity is a small, artificially constructed, only 1½ meter deep, freely accessible swimming pond, which is fed by the water of the Klafterbach. In the natural park some animal enclosures were built, one Gämsengehege , a deer park , a muffle game reserve and a marmot enclosure . A signposted network of trails leads through the nature park, and shelter huts, a barbecue area, a petting zoo and a children's playground have also been built. Guided tours are also offered.
