The Herrengrotte (cadastral number 1865/5), historically also called Herrenloch , is a cave near Schwarzau in the mountains of the Schwarza in Lower Austria.

Location and approach

The cave is located on the Handlesberg left in the valley a good 100 meters southwest above the village in the Klafterwand. It can be easily reached on a forest road from the entrance to the Falkenstein Nature Park at the bathing pond or on the hiking trail from the former Gruber inn to Falkenstein and is located directly above the forest road.

The portal of the 25 meter long cave has a width of 10 meters and a height of 6 meters, to which a hall up to 13 meters wide and up to 11 meters high is connected. The floor of this hall rises slightly after seven meters.

history

The cave is a historical escape cave .

When, during the Turkish siege of Vienna in 1529, janissary troops , marauding militants who plundered in a wide area, also visited Schwarzau, it is said that the inhabitants had fled to the surrounding forests. The place and the church were sacked, but the incursion did not claim any victims.

Archaeological excavations in the cave have confirmed that the Herrenloch was used during this period. It should have been a more well thought-out defensive position, together with the nearby Pfeiferloch , and the women and children must have been accommodated further up in the Frauenloch .
