Ilka Štuhec (born October 26, 1990 in Slovenj Gradec , SR Slovenia , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Slovenian ski racer . She is considered an all-rounder, but is particularly successful in the downhill and super-G disciplines . Her greatest successes so far are the downhill world championship titles in 2017 and 2019.

biography

In 2005, Štuhec won the Trofeo Topolino . In December 2005 she competed in her first FIS race , followed a year later in the European Cup . At the European Youth Olympic Festival in Jaca in February 2007 , she won the gold medal in giant slalom and slalom . One month later, at the 2007 Junior World Championships in Flachau, he won gold medals in slalom and combined . So she could start at the World Cup final in Lenzerheide , but was eliminated. Two weeks later she became the Slovenian champion in downhill and super-G.

In the 2007/08 European Cup season, Štuhec came third three times and won a giant slalom in Abetone . At the Junior World Championships in 2008 in Formigal , she prevailed against the favorite Lara Gut and won the gold medal in the downhill . On March 8, 2008, Štuhec was 22nd of the downhill in Crans-Montana and thus won her first points in a World Cup race . The next day she achieved her first top 15 result in the World Cup as twelfth in the super combination. At the end of March she won all titles at the Slovenian championships.

During the entire 2008/09 season, Štuhec could not contest any races due to injury. After another knee injury, she had to end the 2009/10 season early. After a break of almost two years, she returned to the World Cup at the end of November 2011. In the 2012/13 season she only achieved a few top 30 results, so the sixth place in the Super-G at the 2013 World Cup in Schladming was all the more surprising . On November 30, 2013, Štuhec finished fourth in the Super-G at Beaver Creek , the best World Cup result of her career to date.

After Štuhec was able to classify himself three times in the top ten in 2014/15 and 2015/16 (5th place in the downhill from Garmisch-Partenkirchen on March 7, 2015, 7th place in the Super-G in Lenzerheide on March 12, 2016 and rank 9 in the Super-G at the final in St. Moritz on March 17, 2016), she surprisingly won the downhill run from Lake Louise on December 2, 2016 . She repeated this success a day later in the same place. On December 16, 2016, Štuhec won the combination in Val-d'Isère , where she also won the third downhill win in a row the next day. On February 7th, she finished 11th in the Super-G at the 2017 World Cup . On February 10, she was second in the combination after the descent, but fell in the slalom shortly after the start. Two days later she lived up to her (co-) favorite role in the downhill and won with 0.40 seconds ahead of Stephanie Venier . In the giant slalom on February 16 (after finishing 26th in the first run) she fell in the second run.

On the morning of October 22, 2017, she fell while training in the Tyrolean Pitztal and suffered a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee. She missed the entire season and the 2018 Winter Olympics . At the beginning of the 2018/19 season she was back, and in her fifth race, the descent from Val Gardena on December 18, 2018, she was back on top of the podium; This victory was followed the next day in the Super-G from Val Gardena, and in January there were two more podium places in the downhill runs from Cortina d'Ampezzo (2nd and 3rd place).

At the 2019 World Cup in Åre , Štuhec managed to defend her 2017 title and become the downhill world champion for the second time. The last successful defense of the downhill world champion title was Maria Walliser in 1989. After Tina Maze won the world title in 2015, this was the third Slovenian success in a row. In her first race after the World Cup, the descent from Crans-Montana on February 23, 2019, Štuhec fell. Although she was still able to cross the finish line on her own, her knee was seriously injured again; The diagnosis was cruciate ligament rupture.
