Romed Baumann (born January 14, 1986 in St. Johann in Tirol ) is an Austrian - German ski racer . He starts in all disciplines, achieved his best World Cup results initially in the combination and in the giant slalom and has been particularly successful in the fast downhill and super-G disciplines since the 2010/11 season . At world championships he won the silver medal in the team competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 2011 and the bronze medal in the super combination in Schladming in 2013 .

biography

Romed Baumann grew up as the son of a railroad worker and a teacher in the biathlon stronghold of Hochfilzen . At the age of three he got his first pair of skis from his parents , and as a primary school student he started ski training at the ski club in his home town under Helmut Niedermoser. He completed his Matura in Saalfelden and was a member of the national team of the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV) as a temporary soldier in the federal army until 2019 .

The Tyrolean already showed his talent as a student and, thanks to his successes, moved up over time through the district squad to the squad of the state ski association. In 2003 he joined the ÖSV junior squad, two years later he was promoted to the B squad. After his victory in the downhill race at the Junior World Championship in Maribor , he was allowed to make his debut in the 2004 World Cup and finished 26th in the downhill race in Sestriere . In the 2004/05 season he continued to compete in the European Cup , placing himself regularly among the top 15 runners. In the same year the Tyrolean crowned himself Austrian champion in the general class for the first time in his still young career with victory in the Alpine Combined .

In the winter of 2005/06 he won the combined junior world champion title in Québec , made his first podium places in the European Cup this season and achieved overall victory in the European Downhill Cup . Because of these good performances, he was accepted into the A-squad of the ÖSV in 2006. After his debut in the World Cup in 2006 in Levi, Finland , he was able to attract attention with 14th place in the slalom . Shortly afterwards, he surprisingly achieved his first podium finish in second place in the super combination on the Reiteralm . At the 2007 World Championships in Åre , he finished seventh in the super combined.

Baumann became a consistent point driver in the World Cup and often came in the top 20, but top 10 results were initially the exception. At the 2009 World Championships in Val-d'Isère , he finished eighth in the super combined. Shortly afterwards, he achieved his best World Cup results of the 2008/09 season when he finished fourth twice in the giant slaloms in Sestriere and Kranjska Gora within a week and celebrated his first World Cup victory in the super combination of Sestriere. The Tyrolean achieved the next podium on December 11th, 2009 with third place in the super combination of Val-d'Isère. Another four times he was in the top ten in the 2009/10 season . At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , he reached fifth place in the giant slalom, but failed in the super combined.

In the 2010/11 season Baumann was able to improve significantly in the fast downhill and super-G disciplines. He made it onto the podium three times, with second place in the downhill from Val Gardena being his best result of the season, and another ten times under the top ten, placing him fifth in the Downhill World Cup, seventh in the Super G World Cup and also seventh in the Overall World Cup reached. At the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , he won the silver medal in the team competition. He was also fourth in the downhill, sixth in the Super-G and eleventh in the giant slalom. In the 2011/12 season Baumann won a super combination (in Chamonix) and took second place in two downhill runs.

At the 2013 World Championships in Schladming , Baumann won the bronze medal in the super combined, with the best time in downhill skiing. On February 13, 2017 he was in the lead in the Alpine Combined at the 2017 World Championships in St. Moritz after the downhill run, but then had no chance in the slalom due to the slalom slope, which was influenced by the strong sunlight, and fell back to 12th place.

After his marriage in April 2019, Baumann also took on German citizenship and announced that he would compete for the DSV in the future. The prerequisite was the approval of the World Federation FIS .
