Max Rauffer started for the SC Leitzachtal . From 1991 to 2005 he was a member of the German national ski team. In 1992 he competed in his first World Cup race on the Lauberhorn run in Wengen . From 1995 to 2005 he was among the top 30 of the world rankings in the Downhill and Super-G disciplines in the Ski World Cup.
Rauffer's first career highlight was a third place in the downhill from Kvitfjell in 2000 . His greatest sporting success was winning the downhill race in the Ski World Cup in Val Gardena on December 18, 2004. He was the first German winner of a World Cup downhill race after 13 years when Markus Wasmeier won in the 1991/92 season, and the fourth German ever who won a World Cup downhill run.
In October 2005, less than a year after his victory in Val Gardena, Rauffer gave up competitive sport. He pointed out health problems; in his career he had suffered numerous injuries, including a. two cruciate ligament tears, a shoulder injury, an ankle injury, meniscus damage and two vertebral fractures. The trained carpenter studied industrial engineering at the Munich University of Applied Sciences from 2007 to take over his parents' medium-sized business.
