Cristian Deville (born January 3, 1981 in Cavalese ) is an Italian ski racer . He has been a member of the Italian national ski team since 1999 and specializes in the slalom discipline.

biography

Deville grew up in Moena , a village in the Fassa Valley near Bolzano , where he still lives today. He works for the Guardia di Finanza and skis for their ski club GS Fiamme Gialle. From December 1996 he took part in FIS races , the first victory at this level he achieved in February 2000. He celebrated his first major success in 2001 when he won the Italian Slalom Junior Championship. In the same year he won the bronze medal in slalom at the Junior World Championships in Verbier .

After Deville started in the European Cup for the first time in December 2000 , he had his debut in the World Cup on January 5, 2003 in Kranjska Gora . He won his first World Cup points on February 15, 2004 with 18th place in the slalom in St. Anton am Arlberg . After further top 20 results and a first top 10 result, he found himself among the best in the world in the 2007/08 season with fifth place in Bad Kleinkirchheim , fourth place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and eleventh place overall in the Slalom World Cup. After two weaker years, in which he was only just below the top 30 in the Slalom World Cup, he again achieved two top 5 results and eleventh place in the Slalom World Cup in the 2010/11 season .

At major events, Deville initially remained without results. At his first two world championships in Bormio in 2005 and in Åre in 2007 , he was eliminated in slalom. After not taking part in the 2009 World Championships, he was also eliminated from the first run on his Olympic debut in Vancouver in 2010 . For the first time he stayed at the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. There he achieved seventh place in the slalom. On December 8, 2011, Deville achieved a podium finish in a World Cup race for the first time when he finished second in the slalom in Beaver Creek . He achieved the only World Cup victory of his career on January 22nd, 2012 at the prestigious Hahnenkamm Slalom in Kitzbühel . With a total of four podium places, he finished fourth in the slalom discipline classification of the 2011/12 season .

As a result, Deville was no longer able to maintain this level. His failure rate in slaloms increased and he was only able to classify himself in the top 10 twice in winter 2012/13 . In the winter of 2013/14 , his results were insufficient to qualify for the Winter Olympics in Sochi . While he was once again in the top 15 in the winter of 2014/15 , he remained without a countable World Cup result in the two following years. At the Winter Military World Games in 2017 , he won the bronze medal in slalom. In the winter of 2017/18 he made two World Cup points.
