biography

Junior period

Streitberger was born as the first of three children to Frieda and Georg Streitberger. Mainly at the instigation of his father, a passionate skier, the boy skied for the first time at the age of four and competed in the first children's races at the age of six. As a child, his parents registered him in the Saalbach-Hinterglemm ski club, where they found good training conditions for their son's talent. The first victories in children's and school races followed, including two Austrian school championship titles in 1995 and 1996.

After completing elementary and secondary school in his home town of Maishofen , the 15-year-old Streitberger switched to the Schladming ski trade school , where he was gradually introduced to the alpine cadre of the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV). He contested his first FIS race in December 1996. In 1997 and 1998 he won three Austrian youth championship titles in his age group. In the European Cup , the Salzburg man first competed in the races in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee in January 1998 , then only two years later. With the victory in the giant slalom at the Junior World Championships 2000 in Québec , he celebrated his first international success. As a junior world champion, he made his first appearance in the World Cup at the season finale in Bormio , where he finished 24th. For the time being, this was his only World Cup start.

Successes in the European Cup

In the winter of 2001, Streitberger became Austrian junior champion in giant slalom and super-G. At the Junior World Championships 2001 he had less success and he finished sixth in the Super-G and ninth in the downhill. In January 2002 he achieved his first podium in the European Cup with second place in the downhill from St. Moritz . In the 2002/03 season he came on the podium four times in the Downhill and Super-G, placing him fourth in the Downhill classification, seventh in the Super-G and eighth in the overall classification.

In the next season he celebrated his first European Cup victory in the Super-G of Altenmarkt-Zauchensee and came third in two downhill runs. Streitberger won the Super-G classification and thus got a permanent place in the World Cup for the next season. The results in the 2004/05 World Cup season were, with the exception of 14th place in the Super-G in Kitzbühel , not very encouraging, and so this winter it was mainly used in the European Cup, where it was twice on the podium. In the 2005/06 European Cup season he was able to win the Super-G again with two wins and another three podium places. In the downhill he also managed a victory and a third place, with which he finished third in this discipline classification as well as in the overall classification. In the World Cup he remained without points in his five races of the season. At the Austrian championships he was second behind Andreas Buder in the downhill.

Establishment in the World Cup

In the 2006/07 season , Streitberger was able to establish himself in the World Cup. He finished in the top 10 in three Super Gs and finished tenth in the Super G World Cup. His best result was sixth in Val Gardena . After the end of the season, Salzburg rose from the senior squad to the national team. In the 2007/08 season , Streitberger only made it into the top ten twice in the first three months. For the third time, on March 1st, 2008, he made it into the top 10 on the downhill from Kvitfjell . The following day he celebrated his first World Cup victory in the Super-G. The race was overshadowed by the serious fall of his compatriot Matthias Lanzinger . The 2008/09 season began Streitberger with fourth place in the downhill from Lake Louise . After that, however, he was no longer in the top ten for the entire winter. Finally, at the end of the season, he was transferred back to the senior squad from the national team.

On January 22nd, 2010, Streitberger finished third in the Super-G in Kitzbühel and was on the podium for the first time in almost two years. Overall, he was in the top ten three times in the 2009/10 season . At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , Streitberger took 17th place in the Super-G. In the super combination, he did not start in the slalom after finishing 20th downhill. On December 4, 2010, Streitberger celebrated his second World Cup victory in the Super-G at Beaver Creek . After another podium finish in the Super-G in Kitzbühel, Streitberger fell on the downhill from Chamonix on January 29, 2011 and broke the head of his tibia, which meant he missed the rest of the season. At that time he was leading the Super G World Cup ranking - at the end of the season he was still second behind Didier Cuche .

Comeback, another injury and resignation

With his good results, Streitberger managed to return to the ÖSV national team for the 2011/12 season. In this comeback season he could not quite match the results of the previous year. A tenth and an eighth place at the start of the season in the runs of Lake Louise and Beaver Creek remained his best results, in the Super-G he narrowly missed the top 10 several times. Towards the end of the 2012/13 season he made it onto the podium twice, in the downhill from Garmisch-Partenkirchen and in the Super-G from Kvitfjell.

The 2013/14 season started promisingly in Lake Louise with 6th place in the downhill and 3rd place in the Super G. Until after the Olympic Games in Sochi, in which Streitberger only finished 17th in the downhill and 21st place . Reached place in the Super G, but could not match these achievements. He won the Kvitfjell run on February 28th together with Kjetil Jansrud ; it was his first victory in this discipline.

In January 2016 he had a serious crash in the Hahnenkamm race on the Streif . He suffered a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament and a tear in the outer meniscus of his right knee and had to end the season prematurely. In the 2016/17 season, he only competed in the Super-G in Val-d'Isère on December 2, 2016 , where he was only 43rd. His health problems did not allow any further starts. On March 9, 2017, he announced the end of his career.
