Nicole Gius (born November 16, 1980 in Schlanders ) is a former Italian ski racer from South Tyrol . In the meantime she was considered one of the strongest slalom runners in the Italian national ski team. Between 1999 and 2009 she won the Italian slalom championship seven times , in the World Cup she achieved four podium places in slalom and giant slalom .

biography

Gius first skied under the guidance of her father when he was two years old. She competed in her first children's race when she was seven. In order to practice the sport, she joined the Ortler Ski Club . There her trainer Günther Reinstadler led her up to the Italian national ski team, to which she belonged from 1996. In 1994 Gius won the giant slalom and the Super G of the Whistler Cup . She drove the first FIS races in December 1995. During summer training in 1996, she suffered a fractured tibia and fibula, after which she had to pause for the entire next season. In January 1998 she then contested her first race in the World Cup . Just one year later she was among the top ten for the first time in the St. Anton slalom . In the same year she also won her first Italian championship title . After that, their performance stagnated. Finally, in 2000, she tore a cruciate ligament in her left knee .

With the move to CS Esercito, the sports group of the Italian military, Gius revitalized her career in 2001. In 2002 she reached tenth place in slalom at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City . Her most successful World Cup season followed in 2002/03 : In six races she was able to place in the top ten. She achieved her first podium with third place in the slalom at Semmering . In the end she was in the overall slalom ranking with seventh place in the best place of the Italian team. In the next two seasons, she fell short of expectations despite some good results. Finally, in 2006, she failed to qualify for the Winter Olympics .

In the 2006/07 World Cup winter , Gius came back with strong performances. She finished second in the giant slalom in Kranjska Gora . In the next two years she also achieved a podium placement. In 2006/07 and 2007/08 she was tenth in the giant slalom World Cup. After she had already participated in five world championships since 1999, but had not yet achieved a top result, Nicole Gius finished fifth in the slalom at her 2009 world championship in Val-d'Isère . At the end of the season she was part of the Italian team, which won the team competition in front of Austria and Switzerland on March 15, 2009 in Åre . At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , she reached eighth place in this discipline. In the World Cup, two eighth places were also her best results in the 2009/10 season , but she did not get past a 15th place in the 2010/11 winter . At the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , she was 20th in the slalom.

In the 2011/12 World Cup season, Gius did not get beyond 20th place, which is why she was increasingly used in the European Cup . Before the winter of 2012/13 she was no longer included in the national team squad and subsequently only competed in isolated races, most recently in the World Cup on January 4, 2013 in Zagreb . At the end of March 2013, she announced her retirement from top-class sport.
