Josef Polig (born November 9, 1968 in Sterzing ) is a former Italian ski racer . The climax of the South Tyrolean’s career was winning the combination at the 1992 Winter Olympics ; in the World Cup he was among the top ten 14 times.

biography

Polig's first big success was winning the Italian championship in combination in 1988. In the World Cup he was classified for the first time in the combination of Wengen on January 22, 1989 in the top ten, a little later he finished ninth at the World Championships in Vail in combination. In the following years he reached the top 10 in the World Cup several times, the best result was fifth place in the combination of Kitzbühel on January 19, 1992.

At the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville , Polig was not one of the favorites, but there he achieved the greatest success of his career: with sixth place in the downhill and fifth in the slalom, he won ahead of his compatriot Gianfranco Martin , who also surprisingly reached the podium who have favourited Gold Medal in Combination. He also finished fifth in the Super-G and ninth in the giant slalom.

In the 1992/93 season , Polig achieved fifth place as the best result in the downhill from Kvitfjell on March 20, 1993 and was Italian champion in the combination for the second time. In the 1993/94 season he reached ninth place in the Super-G of Lech , but could no longer follow up on his earlier performances. His last World Cup race was the Super-G in Kitzbühel on January 16, 1995.

Polig was an all-rounder and achieved a place in the top seven in all disciplines in the World Cup. After his active racing career, he completed training as a ski instructor.
