Birdy (singer)

Birdy (2013)

Birdy (* 15. May 1996 as Jasmine Lucilla Elizabeth Jennifer van den Bogaerde in Lymington , Hampshire , England ) is a British pop singer .

Life

Jasmine van den Bogaerde, of Dutch - Belgian descent, was born in 1996 in Lymington , Hampshire as the daughter of the author Rupert and the concert pianist Sophie van den Bogaerde. She is the great niece of the actor Dirk Bogarde .

She learned to play the piano from her mother at the age of seven and began writing her own songs at the age of eight.

She got her nickname Birdy from her parents because as a baby she opened her mouth as wide as a hungry bird in a nest that wanted to be fed.

Career

At the age of twelve she took part in the Open Mic UK 2008 , a talent competition that started locally with thousands of participants and ended with the final of the 22 qualifiers on November 29, 2008 in Portsmouth . There she won both the “under 18” category and the overall Grand Prize with the title Be Free , which she wrote herself. As a prize for her victory, she was given six days of studio recordings. The first publication followed two years later under her nickname Birdy . In March 2011, Skinny Love was released , a cover version of a song by Bon Iver that made it into the top 20 of the UK singles chart. Their second single Shelter , originally from The xx , hit the charts in June.

Their first album Birdy , released in November 2011, reached the top of the charts for one week in 2012 in the Netherlands, the Flemish part of Belgium and Australia. In June 2012, Birdy recorded the song Learn Me Right with the British band Mumford & Sons , which can be heard on the soundtrack of the Pixar film Merida - Legend of the Highlands . She previously sang the song Just a Game for the film The Hunger Games .

The commercial breakthrough for Birdy came in Germany in December 2012. She appeared in the finale of the casting show The Voice of Germany and sang People Help the People (a cover version of the band Cherry Ghost ) together with finalist Isabell Schmidt . Then the single reached number three in the German charts and number two in the Swiss charts . On February 16, 2013, she performed at the Sanremo Festival , the most famous Italian music festival. Her album Fire Within was released on September 27, 2013 , from which Birdy released the songs Wings and No Angel for sale on iTunes .

The singer's third studio album, titled Beautiful Lies , was released by Warner Music on March 25, 2016 . The first single is entitled Keeping Your Head Up . The album was produced by Jim Abbiss ( Arctic Monkeys , Adele ) and Craig Silvey ( Arcade Fire , Florence and the Machine ) , among others .
