Arisman Pongruangrong ( อริ สมันต์ พงศ์ เรืองรอง , RTGS : Aritsaman Phongrueangrong; born January 8, 1964 ) is a Thai political activist and one of the leaders of the National United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship ( UDD for short ; popularly "Red Shirts").

Arisman Pongruangrong was a well-known pop singer . It began its political activity during the opposition protests against the military-backed government of General Suchinda Kraprayoon in May 1992, the violent crackdown of which is remembered as "Black May". In 1995 he was elected to parliament for the Palang Dharma Party , which was then led by Thaksin Shinawatra . In the 1996 election he lost his seat again. In 1998 he moved to the newly founded Thai-Rak-Thai party by Thaksin , on whose list he returned to parliament in 2001. After the military coup in September 2006 that overthrew Thaksin, he was one of the founders of Thaksin-affiliated People's Television and the UDD known as the "Red Shirts" movement.

Riots in Bangkok 2010

Arisman was actively involved in the 2010 riots in Bangkok and was considered a hardliner who also called for violence against the security forces. On April 7, 2010, he led a group of “red shirts” that stormed the parliament building and hunted down the Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban . Police attempted to arrest Arisman and three other red shirt leaders (including Nattawut Saikua ) in a hotel on April 16 . The crowd of demonstrators present prevented them from storming the building, allowing those wanted to escape through the windows and over the facade. The red shirts took four members of the operating police unit as hostages - according to their own statements as a protective measure.

Arisman Pongruangrong was on the run after the military storm on May 19, 2010. On December 7, 2011, after a year and a half, he surrendered to the authorities. After he was initially detained, he was granted bail on December 29, 2011. In February 2012, the competent court allowed him, again against the deposit of a security, to make a three-week pilgrimage to India, from which he returned on time as agreed.
