Birdy is the debut album by the British singer Birdy (real name Jasmine Van den Bogaerde). It was released on November 4, 2011 on Atlantic Records and includes the singles Skinny Love, Shelter and People Help the People .
Singles
"Skinny Love" was released on January 30, 2011 as the first single on the album. It's a cover of a song by the indie folk band Bon Iver . The cover reached number 17 in the UK single charts and number 73 in the German charts.
"Shelter" was released on January 3, 2011 as the second single. It's a cover of the song by indie pop band The xx and peaked at number 50 in the UK.
"People Help The People" as the third single is a cover of the indie rock band Cherry Ghost and was released on October 28, 2011. While it was only number 33 in the chart in Great Britain, People Help The People was the most successful single in Germany and reached number 3.
"1901" was released on March 9, 2012 in the UK as the fourth album single. It's a cover by the French indie rock band Phoenix .
Criticism and reception
For the British Guardian , it is a particularly clever strategy that Birdy released an entire album of indie covers. It has sold a million times, even if the singer has not yet found her own voice. The newspaper gave 3 out of 5 stars. For Rolling Stone , who only gave two out of five stars, the album contains “the most boring music a teenager has ever recorded.” Allmusic rated the album 3½ out of five stars for its irresistible, tasteful production.
