Promotion to the Bundesliga
This is a list of all promotion rounds and relegation games for promotion to the Bundesliga since 1963/64. The conditions for promotion to the Bundesliga have changed several times over the years, for example due to the introduction of new divisions (such as the 2nd Bundesliga in 1974/75 , changing regulations on relegation to the German Bundesliga or the integration of clubs from the former GDR to 1991/92 season).
Promotion rounds to the Bundesliga (Regionalliga 1963 / 64–1973 / 74)
Promotion to the Bundesliga 1964/65
Mode: Qualification and 2 groups of 4 clubs.
The champions of the regional leagues North ( FC St. Pauli ), Berlin ( Tasmania Berlin ), West ( TSV Alemannia Aachen ), Southwest ( Borussia Neunkirchen ) and South ( KSV Hessen Kassel ) qualified directly for the group stage .
There were also the runners-up from the regional leagues north ( Hannover 96 ) and south ( FC Bayern Munich ). First there was a qualifying game between the runner-up of the Regionalliga West ( Wuppertaler SV ) and the runner-up of the Regionalliga Südwest ( FK Pirmasens ).

The champions of the regional leagues North ( Holstein Kiel ), Berlin ( Tennis Borussia Berlin ), West ( Borussia Mönchengladbach ), Southwest ( 1. FC Saarbrücken ) and South ( FC Bayern Munich ) qualified directly for the group stage .
There were also the vice champions from the regional leagues West ( Alemannia Aachen ) and Southwest ( Wormatia Worms ). First there was a qualifying game between the runner-up of the Regionalliga Nord ( FC St. Pauli ) and the runner-up in the Regionalliga Süd ( SSV Reutlingen 05 ).

Direct climber
Since a club from Berlin was supposed to play in the Bundesliga, but Tennis Borussia Berlin, as champions of the Berlin Regionalliga 1964/65, had already failed in the promotion round and the second-placed club Spandauer SV waived promotion, the third-placed club rose.
