The 1965/66 season was the third season of the German men's Bundesliga and was played for the first time with 18 teams. German champion was TSV 1860 München . The top scorer was Lothar Emmerich from Borussia Dortmund with 31 goals.
Season overview
In the run-up to the season, in the absence of a binding article in the articles of association, in the event of a forced relegation, there was a struggle to allocate the space that had become free due to the exclusion of Hertha BSC . On July 22, 1965, the DFB board decided this to last year's table 15. Karlsruher SC . The decision should be final and thus rejected the claims of the bottom of the table of the past season Schalke 04 , the two "Berlin replacement" applicants Tasmania Berlin and Tennis Borussia Berlin as well as SSV Reutlingen 05 , which failed in the promotion round to Borussia Mönchengladbach . However, Tasmania Berlin was given the prospect of being allowed to participate in the 1965/66 season as the 17th club in the course of a possible DFB Bundestag resolution on July 31. Ultimately, the Bundesliga was increased to 18 clubs, so that in addition to Tasmania Berlin, Schalke 04 were also eligible to play.
1860 Munich dominated the first half of the season and was in first place without interruption from the 8th to the 22nd matchday. With a first round balance of 29: 5 points, the Löwen set a record that was only surpassed by FC Bayern Munich in the 2005/06 season (44 points according to the 3-point rule, 30: 4 according to the 2-point rule). After a period of weakness in the second half of the season, however, the team fell back to third behind Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern Munich. Dortmund took over the championship lead on matchday 23, but lost the last three games after winning the European Cup in Glasgow. The 2-0 victory of the Lions in Dortmund on the penultimate match day brought TSV 1860 Munich to lead again in the table and the preliminary decision in the championship.
The very first city derby in Bundesliga history took place on the first match day: 1860 Munich met newcomer Bayern Munich, who had been promoted from the regional league. Already after 30 seconds Konietzka scored the only goal in the game, the Lions won 1-0. From a purely mathematical point of view, this result was decisive for the outcome of the season, because if FC Bayern had won the game, the future record champions would have scored more points than TSV 1860 and would have taken the title accordingly.
Tasmania Berlin, only moved up into the league thanks to the withdrawal of their license for local rivals Hertha BSC, set several negative records: With only 2 wins and 28 defeats, the club was by far the last and, like Borussia Neunkirchen, had to relegate . Only through the draw at 1. FC Kaiserslautern did the team manage to win points on a foreign pitch (1. FCK was the only club that failed to win against Tasmania Berlin this season; both games ended in a draw). Tasmania Berlin also set the negative audience record that is still valid today (with the exception of the ghost games during the corona pandemic 2020); at the home game against Borussia Mönchengladbach on January 15, 1966, only 827 stadium visitors were counted. Meidericher SV's 9-0 win at Tasmania Berlin marked the highest away win in Bundesliga history to date.
In contrast, the other two promoted teams, FC Bayern Munich and Borussia Mönchengladbach, established themselves as top teams in the league over the next few years.
